New Delhi. After Maria Sharapova’s comments that she doesn’t know who Sachin Tendulkar is, Indian government has reacted strongly. External Affairs Ministry has summoned Russian Envoy to demand an explanation.

Sources in South Block have stated Indian government was very angry with Sharapova’s response. Russian envoy has promised to look into the matter as they didn’t want to lose Indian interest in Russian people.

Meanwhile Russian President Vladimir Putin’s office, in an attempt to play down the matter, has stated his “It’s better not to argue with women” statement about Hillary Clinton can be applied in this context as well.

In a related development, Nike, which sponsors Sharapova, has come under pressure. It’s little embarrassing for the American sporting giant, especially as they are also BCCI’s official kit sponsors.

As a compromise, BCCI, Nike and Sharapova camp are working on an arrangement by which Sharapova would be asked to perform an item number during opening ceremony of IPL-8.
