After the success of Formula 1, Buddh International Circuit is set to host an auto race in December. Some 150 auto rickshaw drivers have registered for participation from across the nation. The drivers will first compete in qualifying rounds, and the best 24 will be shortlisted for the finals in December.
Drivers will have to face obstacles on the circuit to reflect real life Indian roads. Some of the obstacles mentioned by the organizers are a crowded toll plaza (resembling the one on National Highway 8 on entrance to Gurgaon), middle aged Punjabi aunties driving in wrong lanes (similar to those in West Delhi), water filled open potholes (a common sight in Gurgaon) etc.
Bunty Yadav, an auto driver in Paharganj area of Delhi, who is popular in that area for making hundreds of late passengers board their train on time at the nearby New Delhi Railway terminal , is very excited about the race. “I am tired of driving on these busy roads of Paharganj. The open spaces on the circuit will let me showcase my real talent,” he commented.
Jaypee Group wants to rope in Salman Khan for waving the flag to start the race. In an exclusive interview to Faking News Salman said, “It is an honor to flag off the race. They are my biggest fan base and make my non-sense movies like Ek Tha Tiger earn 100 crores in the opening weekend.”
Indian auto-rickshaw manufacturer Bajaj is presently making modifications to the autos, adding many features borrowed from Formula 1 racing cars. One such feature is Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) that will recover and store the kinetic energy created by auto’s braking process, and convert it into power that can be called upon to boost acceleration.
“We are very excited about KERS technology. If found a success in the race this December, we plan to introduce the technology into our commercial vehicles. Given autos in crowded parts in Mumbai and Delhi have to apply brakes every fifth second, the technology will re-use all the waste heat generated by the brakes, making our auto-rickshaw’s more fuel efficient,” said Rahul Bajaj, head of Bajaj Group.
Kingfisher is the lead sponsor for the event.” Auto races suit my new non-billionaire image,” said Vijay Mallya.
The race will be first one of its kind on a F1 circuit and will put India on the global auto rickshaw map.
