Speculation is rife about the future of Hindustan Unilever Limited’s (HUL) key beauty product ‘Fair & Lovely’ after recent quarterly results revealed sales of the product have halved in a year.

In addition, HUL CEO and Managing Director Sanjiv Mehta responded to the news by admitting that the company had “known for some time that Fair & Lovely is a declining business”.

The company’s quarterly figures showed that just over six million Fair & Lovely tubes were sold in comparison to 12.7 million during the same period  in 2013, representing a decrease of 55% in revenue and 52% in units sold.

Speaking to FAKING NEWS, HUL chairman Mr. Harish Manwani blamed growing popularity of Instagram, for the decline in demand for Fair & Lovely fairness cream. “In the pictures uploaded to various social networking sites, edited using Instagram’s super cool photo editing feature, people with dull skin are managing to look more attractive and more successful by lightening their skin, without using fairness creams or any other beauty products,” he added.

“Instagram is an awesome photo editing app that supports, awesome photo effects, bokesh effects, space effects, vintage effects, frames etc, it is an online photo sharing, video sharing and social networking service.”

Renu Tyagi bought a tube of Unilever’s Fair & Lovely Fairness Cream at a Big Bazaar supermarket outside New Delhi, with the hope it will improve her 22-year-old daughter’s chances of finding a husband.

“Whether we like it or not, the truth is it’s difficult to find a partner if you have dark skin,” Tyagi, 45, said before her daughter used Instagram to edit her selfies, to upload on a matrimony site, now she is getting good proposals.

“We live in a generation of ‘virtual reality’, social networking has become our reality, how we look on social networking sites has become more important than how we look in real,” says celebrity columnist Shobha De.

“I am a dull colored girl, actually Fair & Lovely is the first cosmetic product which I started using when I was in school, it helped me manage to look fair, but now things are changed, today we live in the age of social networking, how we look on Facebook and other social networks matters more. Thanks to Instagram!, I do not need Fair & Lovely anymore,” says Nisha, 22, an engineering student,

“I am a dark guy, I used Fair & Lovely Menz Active for two years, I couldn’t get a girl friend, I stopped using it, I use Instagram to edit my selfies to upload on Facebook, now I get more likes and comments, and I am dating too..!! thanks to Instagram!” syas Pramod, 29, a private bank employee.

“I used Fair & Lovely Anti Marks to get rid of pimple marks, I do not think I need to use it any more, using Instagram these marks just doesn’t appear. Thanks to Instagram!”, says Nidhi, 16, a 10th standard student.

Thanks to growing popularity of Instagram, Facebook and other social networking sites..!!
