L.K. Advani to be the next Leader of Opposition

In a shocking move today, the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP)-led government urged Sumitra Mahajan, the Lok Sabha speaker, to comply with the Congress and have a leader of opposition (LOP). This decision came in the aftermath of the meeting held between Rahul Gandhi and the top BJP leaders.

The BJP leaders had earlier insisted on only the presence of Rahul Gandhi from the opposition.

The surprise does not end there. The BJP leaders laid down some terms and conditions according to which the LOP should be selected. Rahul Gandhi was so excited about having a LOP that he accepted them without listening to any of it. The terms were:

  1. L.K. Advani should be made the Leader of Opposition.
  2. L.K. Advani should be accommodated in the Congress Party.
  3. Rahul Gandhi should declare himself as the Congress prime-ministerial candidate for the 2019 elections.

Top Congress leaders were aghast with Rahul Gandhi’s decision but Sonia Gandhi intervened and threatened to remove all of them from the Congress party if they didn’t hail Rahul Gandhi’s smartness. This is also supposedly the reason behind positive statements by the Congress leaders for selecting L.K. Advani as the leader of opposition.

Sonia Gandhi when asked for a comment said, ” L.K. Advani had been of great importance to the Congress party during the last election campaign. We would not have won even 44 seats if there hadn’t been opposition to Narendra Modi from the senior leader. We welcome him to the Congress party and he would be an impeccable leader of the opposition.”

According to our sources, L.K. Advani was rather upbeat about being the leader of opposition and joining the Congress party. He would be taking up the post of LOP after a gap of 5 years. The last time around he had to reluctantly give up the post to Sushma Swaraj in 2009. He is also expected to negotiate the 3rd condition set by the BJP and change the prime-ministerial candidate from Rahul Gandhi to himself.

Even though this move to send L.K. Advani to the opposition party is considered as a beneficial decision for Prime minister Narendra Modi, L.K. Advani has vowed to oppose the ruling party everywhere that he can and be a thorn in their side. Only time will tell who is at disadvantage, but this surely is a fun Lok-Sabha in the making.
