In a much anticipated as well as expected move, the Congress party has decided to pass an ordinance to declare the Statue of Unity as a project of national importance and take over its project management under the aegis of the to-be-formed Indira Gandhi National Oversized Monuments Inspiring New Youth (IGNOMINY).
The ordinance has already been drafted and approved internally, and the Home Minister even indicated unofficially to this reporter at a music launch function that CBI is at an advanced stage of negotiations to convince SP, BSP, DMK, JDU and various independents to support the ordinance. When asked about involving the CBI, the HM remarked about their very convincing track record in getting various partners aligned. As is the norm in such political games, the HM spoke on conditions of anonymity.
Shri Rahul Gandhi has been briefed about this development, and the Congress President has arranged special functions for Shri Gandhi to attend outside of the Parliament in the week the ordinance is expected to be presented and passed. Congress pointsmen have been working overtime to ensure no untoward paper tearing activities take place anywhere. As a matter of precaution, all possible press meeting venues in the country have been booked in the name of opposition parties so that Shri Gandhi does not venture near any of them by mistake.
In another piece of unconfirmed news, this reporter has learned that the Statue of Unity project might be named as the Rajiv Gandhi Sardar Patel Statue Yojana. For every kilo of iron collected, 150 grams will be utilized for the purpose of building the statue. The remaining 850 grams will be used to build the coffers to store any further items and monies collected for future projects. It has additionally been proposed that the contributions will be taxed at the hands of the contributor at the suggested market value of the total contribution. CREDAI has been roped in to assist in the evaluation of the market prices of the iron, to ensure professionalism in the entire matter.
More details awaited.
