Bhaag Milkha Bhaag inspired by Temple Run

01, Aug 2013 By avidit

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra has recently revealed in an interview with Faking News that his latest film Bhaag Milkha Bhaag is inspired from Temple Run – a game enjoyed by almost every android phone user, while traveling in local train.

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra first came across the game, while travelling in a local train a couple of years ago. He then could not afford a smart phone himself, because of the heavy losses incurred due to Abhishek Bachhan starrer Delhi 6. But he thinks, it was good that the film made losses, that forced him to travel by local train and that resulted into his encounter with the game, he has the highest admiration for.

“It was really exciting for me to look at the I-pad and smart phone screens of the office-goers everyday, while they traveled from Borivali to Churchgate every morning. I was mesmerized by the game so much that I even tried to snatch an I pad once from a formally dressed gentleman’s hands, but unfortunately I could not succeed in the effort and got beaten up at Churchgate.” said Mehra when asked about how it all started. “However, that beating also inspired me to keep similar scenes in the film.”

When asked about the running on the train sequence, Mehra told us “I wanted to keep the ‘running on train’ sequence at any cost. It was my way of paying a tribute to such an outstanding game, as in the real game also you would see the main character running on the train collecting coins. But it had to be Coal in the main film, otherwise people would say I copied everything from that game. And it went well with Prasoon’s Lyrics – “Koyla kaala hai”. It also helped me keep the film as close as possible to the reality. I mean the reality of the game.”

“I appreciate Farhan Akhtar, for he has put in a tremendous amount of hard work to get into the character. He had to follow a strict daily workout plan. He played Temple Run for 5 hours everyday for 6 months, after which, he could feel the intensity of the character, and could get under the skin of the character.” – says Mehra. “It was then, when he told me – ‘Main neend me chala karta tha, ab main neend me bhaagne laga hoon’ – that I finally decided that he is ready to play the character,” he added.

Faking news team also had a discussion with Prasoon Joshi – the story and the lyrics writer of the film. “It was a great challenge to create a story around the central character of the film, as the central character of Temple Run does not speak any dialogues and is busy collecting coins, while running. He has no relatives, no love story, no family. We still wanted to keep it as close as possible to the game to do justice to it, and that’s where the role of Pakistan came in who fit in perfectly as the chasers; in Milkha Singh’s childhood as well as in his last race. And that did perfect justice to the story. Rakeysh was so happy with my writing, that he has even gifted me an android phone with Temple Run 2 in praise of my good work. But I know he wants me to write Bhaag Milkha Bhaag 2 for him. But this time I am looking for a more challenging assignment. Anubhav Sinha has approached me to write a film on Tetris game, and I want to test myself.” – said Prasoon to the Faking News.

Meanwhile Mehra revealed that he is now playing Mario again after so many years, to check the possibility of a film on his life and tragedies.
