GAJABNAGAR: The sessions court has ordered registration of an FIR against a Golden Retriever, Brownie, who had featured in Fedigree advertisements, which promotes a brand of dog food. Court said that Brownie could be arrested, if required.

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Gajabnagar, Mr. Judgehangtilldeath directed Bowchowki Police Station to register FIR against the Golden Retriever and investigate the complaint by a Businessman, who claimed his dog fell ill after eating the Fedigree.

The complainant has claimed he bought Fedigree from a shop at Bowchowki on May 30 and his dog fell ill after eating it. This, he said, prompted him to file a case against Fedigree, and more important the celebrity dog Brownie who promoted the product as brand ambassadors.

The controversial ad

“My pet dog got attracted by the Ads, especially after watching Brownie on TV, and wanted to eat Fedigree,” he claimed.

The case has been filed under IPC sections 270 (malignant act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life), 273 (sale of noxious food or drink), 276 (sale of drug as a different drug or preparation) and 420 (cheating and dishonesty).

The Consumer Affairs Additional Secretary Bajarangilal had yesterday said the Golden Retriever  would be liable to action if the advertisements are found to be misleading.

“It becomes a misleading advertisement if it is found that the product does not have the attributes that the manufacturer professed. And if the brand ambassador has promoted that product and said specifically that the product has those attributes, they are also certainly liable for action,” Bajarangilal said.

Meanwhile the Golden Retriever Brownie has could not be contacted in person, and when connected through phone all we could hear was bow bow wow wow grrr…
