The NCP held a high profile meeting today evening to come out with a strategy for resolving the current spate of protests over the gangrape of a young girl swaying the capital. FN found out that leading the discussions was Salman Khurshid who advised the party to adopt the strategy he had designed for Arvind Kejriwal.
“Let them come to Raisina Hills, to India Gate, Jantar Mantar, 10 Janpath and wherever else”, he said, “but make sure they don’t go back”. His suggestion came on the back of the Delhi Government closing down 8 Metro Stations and spreading nails on the roads to prevent protesters reaching India Gate, decisions which caused immense inconvenience to commuters and even more resentment against the Government. He also said that he had already told the public that “We should not have street trials” and the Government should now adopt a policy to ensure that there are no trials since like news no trial is good trial.
Rahul Gandhi who had earlier told the protesters “to come out with rational suggestions to ensure that such incidents are prevented” said he wanted the party to take a lead by providing free chastity belts to all women in the NCR to start with. He said that he had caught on the idea by reading about Rape Axe in a blog after the incident but decided it was best to have a time tested device instead of importing Rape Axes.
Moreover, Robert Vadra had promised to manufacture “one size fits all” chastity belts made of pure brass from his factory in Moradabad with a guarantee to provide an assured supply of whatever quantity the Government required. P. Chidambaram strongly came out in support of this idea since it would conserve valuable foreign exchange and contain the trade deficit. Rahul Gandhi also proposed that the Government should open free clinics for infecting young women with HIV and provide them with a confirmation of infection to be included in their “Aadhaar” cards.
They would be paid an incentive through Direct Cash Transfer and when accosted by a rapist would flash their “Aadhar” certification to them. Rahul Gandhi showed the new “Aadhar” card to those present. However, there were several downsides to this as was pointed out in the meeting. Sushil Shinde said that this might create a high demand for such cards not a single one of which had been produced till date and therefore lead women to request underground networks for providing forged versions.
Also rapists could try to circumvent this deterrent by using condoms. Rahul Gandhi true to his colours riposted that he would ensure that all condom factories in the country are shut down. As for forging the cards, he said that the Government was already mulling over the possibility of outsourcing the job to Pakistan since the quality of Indian security documents and even currency notes produced in Pakistan was far superior to the homegrown products.
