In a major embarrassment to the president’s office, Pranab Mukherjee, the current Indian president was caught making prank calls to Delhi residents. A Delhi police spokesman made this stunning revelation at a press conference today.

Apparently, several residents in various parts of Delhi complained to the police that they are getting calls from a private number and the man making the calls was quoting Shakespeare to them. Many politicians were also among those who complained. Police stirred into action when even Manmohan Singh ji started getting these calls.

Someone called up the Prime Minister last night and said: “Well done Manmohan, Give thy thoughts no tongue.”

After running around through the night, police eventually tracked the number down to Pranab Mukherjee’s mobile phone, who has pleaded guilty to the charges.

In a written statement read out by a member of president’s staff, Mr. Mukherjee said, “I am bored out of my wits in this new job and needed something to do. There are only a couple of mercy petitions on my table and I have to spend 5 years thinking over them before passing them on to the next president. What am I supposed to do in the mean time?”

He further went on to add, “I tried everything to keep myself busy, fixing cracks in the walls of the Rashtrapati Bhavan but they turned out to be much quicker to fix than the cracks in a ruling coalition. I pleaded with Mamata Di to hold a sit-in in front of Rashtrapati Bhavan and complain to me about government policies but she refused saying that since she is no longer a part of the government, she has stopped opposing government policies. All the talk about 2G scam reminded me of my mobile and I started playing with it. Plus I hadn’t quoted Shakespeare in a while so to fight my boredom, I started calling people up and quoting Shakespeare.”

Staff at the Rashtrapati Bhavan wasn’t surprised at all with this development. A member on the condition of anonymity said, “From the first day he struggled to understand the retirement home concept of the Rashtrapati Bhavan. He was always asking us how the previous president kept herself busy. We recommended trips to strategically important countries to India like Seychelles, Micronesia, Sao Tome and Principe, Tuvalu etc to follow the lead of Pratibha ji but he asked us the strategic importance of these countries, something the previous president never asked before embarking on a visit.”

Right now Delhi police is unlikely to press any charges but they are contemplating taking away his mobile phone or as a compromise, give him an Airtel sim to ensure he never gets the signal when he needs to make a call.
